Thursday Night Under the Lights
Thursday night brought the first varsity football game of the season as Capital traveled across town to take on Boise at Donna Larsen Park.
The weather couldn’t have been much better for football, although there was one unmistakable reminder that fall is on its way: it’s getting dark earlier. The lights came on, the players settled in, and football season officially felt real.
You could tell it was the first game of the season—not just for the teams, but for the referees too. There were some first-game-of-the-season moments all around as everyone got back into the rhythm of Friday-night… well, Thursday-night football.
One of the coolest parts of the night for me was seeing my boy Uly and four other sophomores: Carter, Javi, Hunter, and Gabe get the opportunity to dress with the varsity team.
I’m super proud of these guys. Getting to suit up with the varsity is a big deal, especially as a sophomore. They’ve put in the work to earn that opportunity, and now they get to experience what Friday, or in this case, Thursday night football at the varsity level is all about.
There’s a lot of football ahead of these five guys, and I’m excited as hell to watch them grow into it.
Hats off to Boise. They played tough, battled throughout the game, and came out on top.
It was great seeing my old friend Mike Altieri on the Boise sideline. Mike and I go way back to our Boise State days, back when we were both a little younger, had fewer gray hairs, and apparently thought we knew what we were doing. Seeing him on the other side of the field was one of those “well, shit, it’s been a minute” moments.
And knowing Mike, I’m not surprised by how Boise showed up. With him leading the way, Boise was tough, organized, and ready to play. So yeah… hats off to Boise.
Obviously, it was a bummer not to see Capital get the win. But if there’s one thing I know about this group, it’s that they’re gritty, they work their asses off, and they don’t stay down for long.
Next week, the Eagles will show up ready.
And probably a little pissed off.
Next week Borah better be ready, because I have a feeling Capital is going to show up angry, determined, and hungry to get one in the win column.
For me, the best part of these nights continues to be getting to stand on the field with a camera in my hands and document it all—the big plays, the tough plays, the celebrations, the frustrations, the players, the coaches, and the families and fans who make high school football what it is.
I’m grateful for every opportunity to be there.
