Eight Touchdowns. One Hell of a Night.
I've been to a lot of football games over the years, and tonight's game against Middleton at Dona Larsen Park was one of the most fun I've watched in a long time.
The Eagles put up 56 points, beat Middleton 56-35, and gave everybody in the stands plenty to cheer about. But as impressive as the score was, the real story was how these kids played. They were fired up, focused, physical, and having a great time doing it.
And there was Quincy.
Eight touchdowns. A new state record.
Six passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and a pick-six on defense. I've seen some incredible individual performances on a football field, but I don't think I've ever watched one kid take over a game quite like that. Quincy was absolutely electric tonight. Every time he touched the ball, you got the feeling something big was about to happen. And more often than not, it did.
Of course, you don't throw that many touchdowns without some guys on the other end making plays. Elliot Schrack was an absolute monster, hauling in four touchdown passes. Isaac Stafford got in on the action with two, and Steven Salvador found the end zone as well. The receivers were making plays, the offensive line was giving Quincy time to work, and the entire offense was clicking.
As much fun as the offense was to watch, I was equally impressed with the defense.
Middleton managed just 51 yards on the ground. Fifty-one. That's not an accident. That's a defensive front doing its job, linebackers filling gaps, and guys flying to the football. Middleton managed to put some points on the board, but the Eagles made them work for every yard.
What stood out to me more than anything tonight was the energy.
These kids were locked in from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. The sideline was alive. Guys were celebrating each other's plays, picking each other up, communicating, and playing like they genuinely loved being out there together. There was a different level of excitement and intensity tonight, and you could feel it from the stands.
I've said before that this team has the talent to compete with anybody. Tonight was a pretty good example of what that looks like when everybody shows up with the same level of focus, enthusiasm, and determination.
And I couldn't help thinking, if the stoke was this high every single week, these guys would be 8-0.
I really believe that.
That's not taking anything away from the teams that have beaten us. It's recognizing what this group is capable of when everybody is pulling in the same direction. The talent has always been there. Tonight, the energy, execution, and attitude matched it.
Football is supposed to be fun. Yes, it's hard work. Yes, it demands discipline, sacrifice, and toughness. But nights like tonight are the payoff. They're why these kids spend countless hours in the weight room, on the practice field, and grinding through the summer heat.
And they're why the rest of us keep showing up to watch.
Next week, we're back at Dona Larsen Park for Senior Night. For some of these guys, it'll be one of the last times they get to put on that Capital uniform and play under the lights with the teammates they've grown up alongside.
I hope they bring every bit of tonight's energy with them.
Because if tonight was any indication of what this team is capable of, we're in for one hell of a Senior Night.
Go Eagles.
